Ovaka Island
Ovaka Island is part of the kingdom of Tonga, a group of islands in the south Pacific, and is unique among the island states in Polynesia in that it was never colonised by Europeans. The inhabitants do credit to the former name of "Friendly Islands" by treating all tourists traditionally like friends.
The Tonga Islands are to be found about 2000 km north of New Zealand and just west of the International Date Line. Thus Tonga is the first territory in the world to greet each new day.
Ovaka Island is a member of the Vava'u group of islands in the far north of Tonga. It lies secluded and surrounded by clear blue waters and beautiful sandy beaches.
The main attractions of Ovaka are the marvelous reef and the wonderful lagoon, which allow visitors to more or less step straight out of their deck chair into the water to swim and snorkel. The Pacific ocean around Ovaka is full of colourful corals and tropical fish which gives divers the impression of swimming in some gigantic exotic aquarium. The coral reefs are protected by law, because Tonga has become the first state in the South Pacific to create National Parks to protect its animal and plant life for future generations.
In Winter (July to September) the temperature varies between 17 and 25 degrees Centigrade. In Summer (December to April) the average temperatures lie between 25 and 33 degrees. The best time to visit is between March and November.
Relax in a hammock, go swimming, diving or snorkeling, sail, canoe or surf, go deep sea fishing or whale watching. The giant humpback whales visit the island between July and November on their excursions from the Antarctic. It is an unforgetable experience to swim or snorkel with these awe-inspiring creatures.
(Until such time as our ecological resort on Ovaka island is opened, our team will endeavour to arrange a holiday you will never forget with other reputable travel firms.)
